What is Keyword Density?
Keyword density is the percentage of the number of times a keyword is present in a post in relevance to the total number of words in the post.
Mathematically, keyword density is calculated as:
(Number of times keyword is present in the post/Total number of keywords in the post) x 100
There is no need to calculate it manually though. To save time and ensure correctness of the calculation, it is advised to use a density checker tool.
To ensure your on-page SEO efforts are complete enough to ensure high rankings, the keyword you’re targeting needs to be present in your article, and not just once, but a couple of times, depending on how long your article is. The longer your article, the more number of times you can get away with mentioning your keyword in your post body.
Low Keyword Density vs. Keyword Stuffing:
You’ll get a low keyword density score if your keyword isn’t mentioned enough in your article and you’ll get a higher than normal score if you stuff your keywords in your content. Keyword stuffing is looked down upon and seen as spammy and low keyword density isn’t helpful in ranking. So neither of these practices will help your rankings.
What is a good keyword density score?
While Google and other search engines have never mentioned a fixed percentage to go for, there isn’t any official score. But through experiments and different percentage uses, a score of 1.5-2% is considered ideal. You don’t have to have your keyword density be exactly 2% but somewhere near that is ideal.
Best Internal Keyword Density Checker Tool:
An internal keyword density checker that you can use within WordPress is the best option as it’s the most convenient. These checkers are usually part of your SEO plugin and appear right below your post internally in WordPress. The one I’ve used for many years is the Yoast SEO plugin. It automatically checks keyword density and gives you a percentage. It also lets you know if your current keyword density based on the chosen keyword is ideal or not so you can correct it if you need to.
